The Western Australian Legal Theory Association (WALTA) is proud to hold this important public seminar at Sheridan Institution of Higher Education, in Perth, Western Australia. The speaker for this seminar is Emeritus Professor Gabriël A. Moens AM. The event will be opened and closed in prayer by Emeritus Archbishop Barry Hickey OAM.

Professor Moens will be introduced by our WALTA President and Sheridan’s Head of Law Professor Augusto Zimmermann.

The Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) has now released its consultation paper about Religious Education Institutions and Anti-Discrimination Laws.

The ALRC paper recommends the removal of all protections enjoyed by religious educational institutions which have been designed to safeguard the ability of these organisations to operate in accordance with their religious beliefs.  If these proposals become law, they will have radical, adverse and permanent consequence for the character and operation of many educational institutions with a religious ethos.  

So, it is critical that we push back against these extreme proposals that will dramatically change the landscape of religious schools in Australia. Please join us in this seminar with Professor Moens, a leading academic in the area of religion and law. The topic of his presentation will be

“Religious Schools and Anti-Discrimination Laws: Are They Really Incompatible?”

Gabriël A. Moens AM, JD (Leuven), LLM (Northwestern), PhD (Sydney), GCEd (Queensland), MBA (Murdoch), MAppL (COL), FCIArb, CIArb, FAIM, FCL, FAAL is an Emeritus Professor of Law at the University of Queensland. He served as Pro Vice Chancellor and as a  Dean  at Murdoch University. He also served as Head, Graduate School of Law, The University of Notre Dame Australia.. Professor Moens is a past winner of a University of Queensland Excellence in Teaching Award. In 1999, he received the Australian Award for University Teaching in Law and Legal Studies. In 2003, the Prime Minister of Australia awarded him the Australian Centenary Medal for services to education. He has taught extensively in the United Kingdom, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Austria, Australia, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, P R China, Hong Kong, Japan and the United States. He is co-author/co-editor of numerous books, including Foundations of the Australian Legal System (LexisNexis, 2023); The Constitution of the Commonwealth of Australia Annotated (9th ed, LexisNexis, 2016); Arbitration and Dispute Resolution in the Resources Sector: An Australian Perspective (Springer, 2015); Jurisprudence of Liberty (2nd ed, LexisNexis, 2011).

The seminar will be opened and closed in prayers by Emeritus Archbishop Barry Hickey OAM KCHS.

Barry James Hickey OAM, KCHS was the eighth Roman Catholic archbishop of the Archdiocese of Perth, Western Australia (1991-2012).  He was ordained Catholic priest in 1958, then ordained Bishop in 1984, and named to Order of Australia in 1980. Archbishop Hickey was also Chairman of the Bishops’ Committee for the Media, 2000-2005, and Chairman of the Bishops’ Commission for Relations with Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders, in 2006.
