Opening Ceremony and Book Launch – Professor Gabriël A. Moens Law Library & ‘Foundations of the Australian Legal System’

On behalf of Sheridan Institute of Higher Education, the Western Australian Legal Theory Association (WALTA) cordially invites you to the official function that celebrates the opening of Professor Gabriël A. Moens Law Library. This important event will be held on Tuesday 4th April at the South Wing building of Sheridan Institute of Higher Education on Suite 1, 10 Nash Street, Perth WA 6000 at 6.30 pm (for a 7 pm commencement).

Emeritus Professor Gabriël A. Moens AM is a prominent Australian academic, researcher, teacher and administrator and his legacy is nothing short of extraordinary. Over his long and distinguished career he has acquired a solid reputation as a leading academic expert in constitutional law, legal philosophy, and business law, in particular in its international and comparative dimensions.

In 2018, Professor Moens was awarded a member of the Order of Australia (AM) Medal for his significant service to higher education. In 2019, he was named the “International Alumnus of the Year” by the Pritzker Law School of Northwestern University, Chicago. In June 2019 he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia for services to the law and higher education. 

On this special occasion we will be also honouring the life and legacy of The Hon. John Gilmour QC (8 October 1951 – 6 February 2021).

A Justice of the Federal Court of Australia from 2006 to March 2018, with his renowned dignity and marked clarity, Justice Gilmour delivered almost 600 judgments spanning the full body of the Court’s work, including important judgments in commercial law, company law and trade practices.

  • Professor Augusto Zimmermann (Head of Law, Sheridan Institute of Higher Education)

On this special occasion The Right Honourable the Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas (The City of Perth) will unveil the plaque that commemorates the official opening of the law library in Perth CBD.

Finally, signed copies of Zimmermann and Moens’s “Foundations of Australian Legal System” (LexisNexis, 2023) will be available with 20 per cent discount to all attendees on the night. Throughout, the focuses on the importance and continuing relevance of this concept of legality known as ‘the Rule of Law’ for the maintenance and security of a mature legal system. The book also details legal ethics and the legal responsibility of lawyers.
