The Western Australian Legal Theory Association cordially invites you to attend the Church and State Perth, an exciting event concerning the relationship between Christians & government, and how Christians can effectively be salt & light in the public square.
This unique conference will include special presentations from Prof Augusto Zimmermann, Hon Nick Goiran, John Steenhof, James Macpherson, Dr Stephen Chavura, Dave Pellowe and many others, as well as time for Q&A and extended conversation over Saturday lunch and afternoon.

ABOUT SOME OF THE SPEAKERS
John Steenhof is the Managing Director and principal lawyer at the Human Rights Law Alliance (HRLA). Since commencing as a law firm in 2019, HRLA has provided legal advocacy and advice to people who are under attack for living out their faith and convictions in public. Previously, John led the corporate and commercial legal practice at Steenhof Brothers together with his brother Simon.
Augusto Zimmermann is Professor of Law and Head of Law at the Sheridan Institute of Higher Education, Perth. He is a fierce advocate of free speech and the Rule of Law, and the author/co-author/editor/co-editor of numerous books, including Christian Foundations of the Common Law (3 Volumes); Fundamental Rights in the Age of Covid-19; Deconstructing ScoMo: Critical Reflections on Australia’s 30th Prime Minister; and Wokeshevism: Critical Theories and the Tyrant Left.
James Parker has an unusually rich life story which involves being fostered and adopted, childhood sexual abuse, LGBTQ+ activism and questioning his gender. James has an international ministry in the godly restoration of all men and women. He facilitates True Identity, an informal national network creating peer support for those struggling with porn, sex addiction and issues relating to sexuality, gender and identity.
Dr Stephen Chavura is another audience favourite at many CAS events. He has (co)written three books and written many articles for The Australian and the Spectator Australia. He researches and teaches the history of Western civilisation and is Senior Lecturer in history at Campion College, Sydney – Australia’s first liberal arts college. Stephen holds a Ph.D. in the history of early-modern English political thought.
James Macpherson is a brilliantly clever speaker and audience favourite. A veteran journalist and regular political commentator on Sky News since 2022, this year James hosts his own nightly show, The Late Debate, featuring debate and discussion with passion and a little bit of fun. He also writes for Rebel News, Sky News, and The Spectator.
Hon Nick Goiran MLC is a conservative Member of the Legislative Council representing the South Metropolitan Region since 2009, and popularly re-elected 3 more times. Holding a robust pro-life and pro-family ethic, he has served W.A. as a Shadow Attorney General; Shadow Minister for Child Protection; Industrial Relations; Commerce and Prevention of Family and Domestic Violence.
Maryka Groenewald has passionately been serving the WA community for 15 years. Fighting at the coal face of freedom and family values in a minor party long before it was cool, she has been leading Australian Christians since 2016. Maryka brings experience in community development, program development, campaigning and elections, problem-solving, community engagement and public speaking. Maryka holds qualifications in community development, politics and leadership.
Dave Pellowe specialises in Christian voter education as the Director of Church And State Ministries (founded in 2016 to arm Christians to influence culture). Dave produces and presents The Church And State Show weekly on The Good Sauce and ADH TV. Dave also convenes the annual Australian Church And State Summit in Brisbane and conferences around Australia.
